We’ve installed three differernt boat lift systems on Osoyoos Lake — the FLOE vertical boat lift, the Sunstream hydraulic lift, and the Sunstream FloatLift. All three work. None of them is right for every property. And after doing this on Osoyoos Lake specifically, we have some clear opinions about which one fits which situation.

This isn’t a manufacturer’s spec sheet. It’s what we’ve actually observed: what works at a marina versus a private residence, how each handles Osoyoos’s seasonal removal requirements, and where the tradeoffs actually land. If you’re trying to narrow down your options, here’s how we think through it with customers.

The First Question: Marina Slip or Private Shoreline?

This single factor narrows the decision significantly.

If You’re in a Marina

A Sunstream hydraulic lift is almost always the right call for marina-based boat owners. Marina slips have defined dimensions and permanent dock infrastructure — conditions where hydraulic lifts thrive. The low-profile design keeps your boat sitting close to the water’s surface and off the dock, and the push-button automation means you’re in and out without any manual effort.

Hydraulic lifts also tend to be the aesthetic preference in marina environments. They’re clean, modern, and don’t require the same kind of seasonal handling that other lift types do. If you’re in a permanent slip and you value ease of use above everything else, this is your lift.

If You’re on a Private Property

Private residence owners have more options — and honestly, more factors to think through. Your shoreline conditions, whether you want a canopy, how much work you’re willing to do in spring and fall, and how much you care about a low waterfront profile all play a role. We’ll break each of those down below.

The Osoyoos Factor: Seasonal Removal Is Non-Negotiable

Unlike some BC lakes where lift systems can stay in place year-round, Osoyoos Lake requires seasonal installation and removal. If you pick a lift that’s a pain to pull out every fall, that pain compounds over years of ownership.

For most private property owners on Osoyoos Lake who aren’t in a marina, FLOE’s seasonal handling advantages are significant enough that it’s often our first recommendation.

Do You Want a Canopy?

If protecting your boat from Osoyoos’s intense UV exposure is important to you — and at 35–40°C summer temperatures, it should be — a canopy is worth serious consideration.

On this point, there’s no debate: FLOE makes the best canopy on the market, and it’s not particularly close.

FLOE canopies are the strongest in the industry across any manufacturer we’re aware of, they offer the best coverage and durability for BC conditions, and they consistently come in at a lower price point than competitors. Sunstream hydraulic lifts can technically accommodate canopies, but if canopy coverage is a priority, we’ll steer you toward FLOE every time.

Water Depth and Shoreline Conditions

Osoyoos Lake has a range of shoreline environments — some properties have steep drop-offs into deeper water, others have shallow, protected bays with gradual slopes. Depth influences which lift system is practical.

Shallower water and fluctuating levels are where FLOE’s vertical lift design performs extremely well. The Easy-Level™ system adjusts lift height with nothing more than a cordless drill: no getting wet, no pin alignment, infinite adjustment. Osoyoos Lake levels shift seasonally due to irrigation management by the Osoyoos Lake Water Board, so that adjustability matters.

Deeper water or fixed dock setups open the door more readily to hydraulic lifts. The Sunlift X handles capacities up to 30,000 lbs and offers an adjustable lifting range up to 6.5 feet, making it adaptable to significant depth variation.

Unique or challenging setups — shallow bays where pile-mounted or vertical lifts aren’t practical, or properties where you want a lift that can be relocated like a boat — are where the Sunstream FloatLift earns its place.

It needs as little as 12 inches of water under the keel, ties off at your dock line, and can be moved to a different position if your mooring situation changes. We’ve installed FloatLifts at coastal properties on Salt Spring Island where saltwater exposure made fixed systems impractical (see that project here), and the same applies to Osoyoos properties with shallow or irregular shoreline conditions. If your setup doesn’t fit the standard configurations, the FloatLift is the flexible option worth discussing.

Aesthetics vs. Functionality: The Honest Tradeoff

Some Osoyoos waterfront property owners prioritize how their dock looks as much as how it performs. Premium lakefront properties in the South Okanagan hold significant value, and the visual impression of your waterfront matters.

If low-profile aesthetics are the priority, a Sunstream hydraulic lift is the better choice. The lift sits close to the water with a clean, modern frame — there’s nothing mechanical or industrial-looking about it. For owners who want their waterfront to look as good as it functions, hydraulic wins on this dimension.

If usability and ownership experience are the priority, FLOE is the stronger all-around platform. It’s easier to adjust, easier to move seasonally, better for canopies, and backed by a 15-year limited warranty on a bolt-together aluminum frame that handles BC’s freeze-thaw cycles without the structural fatigue that welded frames can develop over time.

Neither choice is wrong. It comes down to what you value most.
